We are combating climate change
Every country in the world is affected by the consequences of climate change. This will, in the future, increasingly impact upon the daily lives of everyone. We must act now to stop global warming. The aim is to restrict global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees. This has been agreed by the member states of the United Nations. In order to achieve this, greenhouse gases must be reduced and fossil energy sources replaced by sustainable energy. Wealthier countries will have to respond to the needs of developing countries which are affected the most by the consequences of climate change.
The Netherlands is not doing well in this respect. Greenhouse gas emissions calculated on a per capita basis are still too high. If the Netherlands wants to meet the target by 2030 (halving emissions compared to 1990), then we need to invest on a massive scale and switch to renewable energy.
What are we doing?
Gasunie is one of the top 10 electricity users in the Netherlands. We are tackling the reduction of our CO2 footprint in three ways:
- We are one of the frontrunners in terms of reducing our natural gas emissions (methane emissions).
- We are using the energy that is required for gas transport more and more efficiently.
- We are 'greening' our electricity consumption.
We are buying sustainable energy and hence stimulating the supply of sustainable energy in the Netherlands. We are taking a robust approach towards our methane emissions and we are always looking for new ways to further reduce our emissions in our regular operations. We are giving green gas special treatment in our network by regulating its injection, certification and marketability as efficiently as possible. We are looking into how we can buy more and more through circular purchasing. We have made progress in recent years but there is still a long way to go.
